Tailored Education Pathways

COPE - Care of Older People Education

A. Frailty & Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA)

Frailty—a reversible state of vulnerability—affects up to 24 % of older adults in the UK and is linked to falls, hospitalisation and loss of independence.

COPE’s frailty module can be bespoke pitched to the workforce’s needs whether clinical or non-clinical staff. This covers:

  • Frailty identification
  • CGA components: physical health, cognition, mood, mobility, social context, medications
  • Multidisciplinary working
  • Adaptations for different settings (e.g. care homes, virtual frailty ward systems)

Impact focus: Strengthen early detection of frailty, foster independent living, and reduce crises through tailored intervention plans.

B. Community Geriatrics & Virtual Pathways

As care shifts from hospitals to homes, GP-led and community-based models are essential. Our community geriatrics education supports:

  • Trainee & GP clusters: delivering community-based CGA, MDT reflections, multimorbidity care, falls, dementia
  • Integrated care frameworks: coordination between primary, secondary, and social care for older adults with complex needs
  • Case-based learning: real-life scenarios illustrating home-based assessments, cross-sector collaboration, crisis prevention
  • Outcome focus: Better continuity of care, reduced resource use, improved patient/carer satisfaction.

C. Care Home & Domiciliary Care Workers

Easy to access & designed around real care situations. You’ll learn how to:

  • Spot signs of frailty early –why it matters
  • Prevent falls and safely support mobility
  • Understand dementia and memory loss
  • Support people at end of life with dignity and calm
  • Communicate better with families, GPs and nurses
  • Keep people well at home and reduce avoidable hospital visits

Every topic is practical, with simple language, real-life examples, and tips you can use right away.

D. Geriatric Oncology

Older adults represent a growing proportion of cancer diagnoses (60–70 %), yet treatment pathways are often based on younger cohorts. COPE’s Geriatric Oncology strand offers:

  • Geriatric oncology fundamentals: multi-dimensional assessment, frailty-informed decision aids, comorbidity appraisal
  • Treatment planning: decision-making, balancing patient resilience & priorities
  • Multidisciplinary models
  • Service delivery: delivering oncology frailty assessments where no geriatricians

Impact focus: Ensuring older adults receive equitable, tailored cancer care with maximised benefit & reduced toxicity.
